Why do we cool before or after laser?

The primary objective of laser hair removal is to maximise thermal damage to the targeted hair follicles while minimising injury to the surrounding tissues. This is done by targeting the melanin (colour) in the hair with the laser.  This means generating heat to at least 70 degrees.

This can be painful as our pain threshold starts at 45 degrees. Also, our darker-skinned clients are more susceptible to pain on account of their increased epidermal melanin and also risk to blistering, scarring, and pigmentation.

A method of dealing with this problem is to selectively cool the most superficial layers of the skin.
By using ice packs, we can cool and protect the epidermis, thus enabling us to deliver a higher fluence in the targeted area, resulting in better results for our clients.

We post cool because most of the light energy that remains in the skin will be attempting to heat up other tissues, such as the collagen. We must deal with this excess heat energy quickly before any damage is done.

The most efficient way is to apply ice packs immediately after an area has been treated. This will draw out the excess heat quickly and significantly reduce the risk of unwanted skin damage.

Cooling also makes it less painful for our clients and more comfortable to treat.

Cold Therapy
Pace the Gel Pack in the fridge for 2 hours, or freezer for 20 minutes.
Ice packs are the most common way to treat spirts injuries or sooth pain. The application of the ice to an injury early can substantially decrease the extent of the damage. It also helps with reducing muscle spasms and decreasing the amount of bleeding by closing down blood vessels. Our gel allows the ice packs to stay flexible while staying ice cold for up to 2 hours.

Heat Therapy
Heat the Gel Pack in the microwave for 8-10 seconds. You may add more time in 5 second increments as needed u till desired temperature is reached. Using heat therapy is common for chronic pain or injuries. It should be used at least 24 after an injury once swelling and blee has stopped. Heat can also be used before exercise to warn the muscles but should be avoided after exercise. Apply 15-20 minutes at a time. Our Heat packs are excellent at retaining heat. Heat therapy should never be to hot to the point of burning the skin.
